In what is now Zanzibar Town there is an old section known as Stone Town. This island town in the Indian Ocean was a center for the arab slave trade. In these photos you see a church built over the site of a format slave market.
The church preserved two of the dungeons used to house the slaves. We were told that one held up to fifty people and the other 75. As you can see it is a very low ceiling.
At that time this site was near the shoreline and at high tide water would actually enter the dungeon. There are no toilets. This site is now dedicated to preserving the terrible history of slavery so that we can see and remember it.
